Te gedenken gebeurtenis: Guimarães (Noord-Portugal), Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2012

Beschrijving van het ontwerp: Op het binnenste gedeelte van de munt is een gestileerde afbeelding te zien van Afonso Henriques, de eerste koning van Portugal, met zijn zwaard en het kasteel van Guimarães, dat wordt beschouwd als de plaats waar Portugal in de twaalfde eeuw als onafhankelijke natie is ontstaan. Links van de afbeelding staat het wapen van Portugal, met daaronder PORTUGAL. Rechts onder staat de inscriptie GUIMARÃES 2012 met het logo van Guimarães 2012, Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. Langs de onderste rand van het binnenste gedeelte zijn het muntmerk INCM en de naam van de ontwerper JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES aangebracht.

Langs de buitenrand van de munt zijn de twaalf sterren van de Europese Unie afgebeeld.

Description: : The inner part of the coin depicts a stylised image of Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, together with his sword and the Castle of Guimarães, which is regarded as the birthplace of Portugal as an independent nation in the 12th century. To the left of the image is the Portuguese shield above the word “PORTUGAL”. To the lower right is the inscription “GUIMARÃES 2012” with the logo of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture. Along the lower edge of the inner part are the mintmark “INCM” and the name of the designer, “JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES”.

The outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
